… I think it was really some kind of outer influence that brought us all together at this particular point in time. "I don't think that I knew myself as a person enough and that translating to be able to sing with the heart and emotion that is required. "Maybe 15 years ago, I might not have been the right guy for this band," he says. Hansen says the success of "Can't Slow Down" and Foreigner's live shows demonstrate he and the band made the right decision to come together. It's not like it's Frank Sinatra doing a version of Foreigner songs." These songs are great songs with great melodies and great lyrics and this is the band that put those songs out originally. "But choosing not to because you feel it's better for the song is the way I like to go.
"And some singers go out there, and whether they're either bored or just want to display their abilities, go out and they change and they improv way too much. "Personally I like to go to a show and hear a song the way I learned to love it on the radio," Hansen says. "We were interested in doing these songs faithfully and giving them the justice they're due and providing them with the kind of quality of performance and interpretation that they should have," he says. Hansen says he sang the songs, as he does in concert, largely unchanged from the original versions. To help re-establish the band, "Can't Slow Down" included a second disc and a DVD containing 12 of Foreigner's previous 17 Top 30 hits, nearly all of them written by Jones and Gramm, sung by Hansen. The group released "Can't Slow Down" exclusively through Walmart last October, but in May it became available everywhere. But Hansen says the challenge was "to even make people aware that you have a new release out because there's such a diverse outlet of media and entertainment for people to go to." Hansen, Jones and the disc's co-producer, Marti Frederiksen - who has worked with Aerosmith and Buckcherry - wrote the disc. "And it was strenuous and it was difficult, but we wanted to make sure that we got this new CD done, because there wasn't going to be a good time to take off four months or six months and just kind of hang out, write and record in a leisurely way."
But Hansen says that left little time to produce new music until, in 2008, the band said, "We have to do a new album and we have to put our foot down."īut the band still was busy with shows, "so that meant while we were on tour in the U.S., we had to record," Hansen says.
